The Venezuelan guitarist Luis Zea studied with Antonio Lauro in Caracas. He also attended master classes given by Alirio Díaz, Leopoldo Igarza and Rómulo Lazarde. In England he made further guitar studies with John Duarte and completed his musical education at King's College (University of London), where he obtained his Bachelor of Music Degree (1980) and the Certificate of Advanced Musical Studies (1981). Later he also earned a Master of Music Degree from the University of Reading (1983).
Luis Zea has performed and given masterclasses at many international guitar events in over twenty countries in Europe, Latin America and North America, including appearances at the Wigmore Hall (London) and Alice Tully Hall (New York). Zea was appointed as full-time Visiting Professor at the Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington (1997-98), and the State University of New York (Fredonia, 2004). He has performed and given masterclasses at other venues in the US, such as the Manhattan School of Music in New York, the Boston Conservatory of Music and California State University at Northridge and Fullerton.
For ten years (1976-86), Zea taught and performed at the Cannington International Guitar Summer School (Somerset, England). He has also been invited as soloist and jury member at many national and international festivals and competitions, including the Alirio Díaz International Guitar Competition and the Festival Internacional de Agosto (Venezuela), the Classical Guitar Festival of Great Britain and the Bolivar Hall International Guitar Festival (England), the Festival y Concurso Internacional de Guitarra de La Habana (Cuba), the Concorso Internazionale di Chitarra Classica "Citta de Alessandria" (Italy), the Volos International Guitar Festival (Greece), and many others.
His articles, compositions and arrangements have been published in Venezuela, England, Italy, USA, Germany and Canada. Luis Zea is the co-author (with John Duarte) of the book The Guitarist's Hands, published by Universal Edition (1978), and has written over sixty articles for several international guitar journals such as Classical Guitar and Guitar International (England), Guitar Player (USA), Gitarre und Laute (Germany) and Guitar Forum (journal of the European Guitar Teachers Association-UK). The Canadian publishing Co. Dobberman Yppan also started a series featuring some of Mr. Zea’s guitar compositions and arrangements. His CD Vals Elegíaco has received much critical acclaim. He is currently working on his next recording proyect with music by Latin American composers.
Luis Zea resides in Caracas where he teaches at the Instituto Universitario de Estudios Musicales (IUDEM), and Conservatorio Emil Friedman. Zea performs on a Daniel Friederich guitar (1980) fretted with D’Addario Pro-Arté strings. The world-famous Cuban composer Leo Brouwer has described him as "the ideal soloist."
